About UnderstandMyScan
Meet the physician behind UnderstandMyScan
Clear, patient-friendly explanations of imaging reports written with the perspective of a board-certified radiologist.
Why I created this site
I created UnderstandMyScan to help patients better understand their medical imaging reports. Radiology reports are written for physicians and often contain technical language that can be difficult to interpret without medical training.
This site provides clear explanations for report findings so patients can better understand what their reports may mean and feel more informed when discussing results with their doctors.
About Dr. Sean Litherland, MD
I am a board-certified radiologist with extensive experience in breast imaging and additional specialized training in neuroradiology. My clinical work focuses on interpreting complex imaging studies and clearly communicating complex imaging findings to both physicians and patients.
Over the course of my career, I have seen how confusing imaging reports can be for patients reading them on their own. Many reports contain technical terminology that can sound alarming even when the findings are common or harmless.
I created UnderstandMyScan to help bridge that communication gap and make imaging reports easier for patients to understand.

Why I Created UnderstandMyScan
Over the course of my career as a radiologist, I have seen how confusing and overwhelming imaging reports can feel for patients reading them on their own
Many reports contain technical medical terminology that can sound alarming even when the findings are common, benign, or manageable.
I created UnderstandMyScan to help bridge that communication gap by providing clear, patient-friendly explanations written from the perspective of a practicing radiologist.
The initial focus of this site is breast imaging, an area where I have extensive clinical experience and where patients often have understandable anxiety and questions about their imaging results.
In addition to breast imaging, I also have specialized training in neuroradiology, and future educational content may expand into brain imaging and other radiology topics over time.
My goal is simple:
to help patients better understand their reports with clarity, honesty, and context.
How this site helps
Patients can paste text from their imaging report or upload a PDF to receive a simplified explanation written in plain English.
The goal is to help patients understand:
- what a finding typically means
- whether it is commonly harmless or incidental
- what questions they may want to ask their healthcare provider
This service provides educational explanations of radiology reports and does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Medical decisions should always be made in consultation with your physician.
