FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

UnderstandMyScan helps patients understand breast imaging terminology, findings, procedures, and recommendations, often through a participating breast center.

1. What is UnderstandMyScan?

UnderstandMyScan is a patient education platform designed to help make breast imaging easier to understand. Breast imaging reports and recommendations are written primarily for healthcare professionals and may contain unfamiliar terms. UnderstandMyScan provides clear, calm educational information that helps patients better understand common breast imaging findings, procedures, and next steps.

2. How do patients access UnderstandMyScan?

UnderstandMyScan may be offered through a participating breast center as part of its patient education and communication resources. Patients may be directed to the educational portal through their breast center's website, patient portal, result letter, QR-code card, printed handout, or other communication.

3. Is UnderstandMyScan a medical practice?

No. UnderstandMyScan is a patient education resource. It does not provide medical care, establish a physician-patient relationship, or replace communication with your breast imaging team or other healthcare providers.

4. Is the information medical advice?

No. The information provided through UnderstandMyScan is for general educational purposes and is not individualized medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Your healthcare provider can interpret your imaging results in the context of your medical history, symptoms, physical examination, and other relevant information.

5. Does UnderstandMyScan replace speaking with my doctor?

No. UnderstandMyScan is intended to support, not replace, the conversations you have with your healthcare providers. Your breast imaging team and treating healthcare providers remain the best sources for questions about your personal results, recommendations, and medical care.

6. Who develops the educational content?

The educational content is developed and reviewed with physician oversight by a board-certified radiologist with extensive experience in breast imaging. The goal is to preserve medical accuracy while explaining complicated terminology in language that is easier for patients to understand.

7. What topics does UnderstandMyScan explain?

The platform focuses on breast imaging and related patient education, including screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, breast density, BI-RADS assessment categories, callbacks, additional imaging, breast biopsies, common benign findings, follow-up recommendations, breast pathology terminology, and frequently asked patient questions. The exact resources available may vary depending on the participating breast center.

8. Does UnderstandMyScan review my actual mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI images?

No. The general educational resources on UnderstandMyScan do not review or reinterpret a patient's original medical images. Your images and official imaging report are interpreted by the radiologist responsible for your examination.

9. Does UnderstandMyScan provide a second opinion?

No. UnderstandMyScan does not provide an independent diagnostic interpretation or replace the official radiology report. Its purpose is to help patients understand commonly used terminology and the general meaning of breast imaging findings and recommendations.

10. Why might my recommendation differ from the information on this site?

Every patient's situation is different. Recommendations may depend on prior imaging, age, symptoms, personal and family history, physical examination findings, breast cancer risk, and the appearance of a finding on the actual images. The information on UnderstandMyScan provides general education. Patients should follow the recommendation given by their radiologist or treating healthcare provider.

11. What should I do if I have a question about my personal results?

Contact the breast center or healthcare provider who ordered or performed your examination. They can review your specific results and explain what they mean for you. UnderstandMyScan may help you become familiar with the terminology before that conversation.

12. What if my report recommends additional imaging or a biopsy?

A recommendation for additional imaging or biopsy does not automatically mean that breast cancer is present. Additional evaluation is often needed because the radiologist needs more information to fully assess an area. Your breast imaging team can explain the recommended next step and help arrange appropriate follow-up.

13. What should I do if I have a new breast symptom?

Contact your healthcare provider or breast center. New symptoms, such as a lump, nipple discharge, skin changes, or persistent focal breast pain, may require clinical evaluation even when a recent screening examination was normal. The educational information on this site should not be used to evaluate a new or urgent symptom.

14. Is UnderstandMyScan only available through one breast center?

UnderstandMyScan forms exclusive local partnerships with selected breast centers. This allows each participating organization to offer a distinctive, locally branded patient education experience within its market. Availability may therefore depend on whether a participating breast center serves your area.

15. Can breast centers customize the platform?

Yes. UnderstandMyScan can be adapted to reflect a participating breast center's branding, services, workflows, and approach to patient communication. Resources may include a co-branded education portal, printable handouts, QR-code materials, result-message templates, biopsy education, staff communication tools, and other patient education resources.

16. How can a breast center learn more about partnering with UnderstandMyScan?

Breast centers interested in a patient education partnership can contact UnderstandMyScan through the Contact page. Partnerships are structured around the needs of the organization and may include local market exclusivity.
